Part of me is really struggling to keep from saying “I told you so” about the next Warner Brothers superhero film, Suicide Squad.  Well?  I kind of told you so.

You guys remember I’m sure the trailer for the DC Comics team of villains film, using “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen in an attempt to really capture the attention of the audience:

We voiced our concern when this trailer hit, saying that while yes, a well edited and put together trailer, “we bet that’s all the jokes right there”.  According to this piece over on Birth.Movies.Death, we were right on the money with that concern.

the trailer for Suicide Squad, the one with the Queen song, did not represent the film as it then existed. “Every joke in the movie is in that trailer,” this source told me.

The general consensus for a while was that Warner Brothers was at first unconcerned with the success of Fox’s R-Rated superhero comedy Deadpool, noting that DC Comics titles are historically darker and less humor-filled than the average Marvel Comics character.  Since the incredible box office shattering records, it looks now like WB has changed their stance on this, and are currently doing reshoots for Suicide Squad.  BMD’s writer Devin Faraci goes on to say

I have since spoken to more sources and I understand that the reshoots are happening right now, as recently as this week, and that they’re big – tens of millions of dollars big. And they’re adding more humor and lightness into the film.

If you’re looking forward to the Suicide Squad film for the humor aspect, this may be good news for you.  If you were hoping for a more serious look at this unlikely team, this could be bad news.  Either way, I’m still not really looking forward to this project by any stretch of the imagination.  I’m going to go watch Batman: The Animated Series again.

Suicide Squad opens worldwide on August 5th, 2016.
