With Independence Day just around the corner, there’s only one thing we’re all thinking about…FOOD! Okay, okay, we should be thinking about America, but as the world’s most gluttonous country they’re basically one in the same, right? On this patriotic holiday, we’ve decided to celebrate our favorite American hero, Captain America!

Now there are many iconic symbols who represent America, including Uncle Sam, the Statue of Liberty, Rosie the Riveter, Bald Eagles, and even McDonalds, let’s be real here. But Rogers is one in particular that I think holds a special place in all of our hearts, a man whose name makes crowds cheer, makes men shout “‘MURICA” at the top of their lungs, and, well, makes the ladies swoon.

And that, ladies and gents, is why he’s the star spangled man with a plan. His iconic stars and stripes shield can be recognized anywhere, so we thought what better way to celebrate America’s independence than with a delicious holiday pie in the shape of our Captain’s patriotic shield? And no, there’s no “fondue” included in this recipe, despite my very strong urge to do so.

Here’s the recipe:

Ingredients:

2 pie crust rolls

2 cans strawberry pie filling

1 can blueberry pie filling

1 cup fresh strawberries

1/3 cup fresh blueberries

whipped cream

STEP ONE

gif1
Spray a glass pie pan with cooking spray.

STEP TWO

gif2
Press one roll of pie crust over the pan, gently pressing down so it is tight against the glass.

STEP THREE

gif3

gif4
Pour a fist-sized glob of blueberry pie filling into the center, then fill the space around it with strawberry pie filling.

STEP FOUR

gif5
Cover the pie with the second roll of pie crust. Wet your fingers to stick the two pieces together.

STEP FIVE

gif6
Create the zig-zag rim by pinching along the edges of the crust with both hands, using your pointer fingers and thumbs. Go all the way around the edge.

STEP SIX

gif7
Cut slits in the top to allow the pie to breathe.

STEP SEVEN

gif8
Bake at 425 F for 35 minutes or until the pie is golden brown. Then, refrigerate until it is cooled completely.

STEP EIGHT

gif9
Once pie is cool, spread leftover strawberry glaze over the pie (remove any chunks of strawberries).

STEP NINE

gif10
Create two rings of sliced strawberries, mimicking Captain America’s shield.

STEP TEN

11
Draw a star out of blueberries in the center, then fill out the extra space around it with more blueberries to create the blue circle in the center of the shield.

STEP ELEVEN

gif12
Squirt whipped cream around the pie in between the two strawberry circles, making a “white stripe.” Then fill in the star with whipped cream – the easiest way to do this is to start in the center and gently let go as you reach the end of each leg so the whipped cream thins to a sharp point.

Whip this baby out at your 4th of July party and serve!
