HBO has announced a new TV series based on the 2014 Slenderman stabbing and internet phenomenon. Two 12 year old girls, went deep into the Waukesha, Wisconsin, woods and stabbed a classmate 19 times in the torso. The two girls later claimed that “they [did it] to show devotion to Slenderman, to prove he’s real, and so he wouldn’t kill their families.”

If you don’t know who or what the Slenderman is, it is a purely fictional monster created  on the Something Awful forums. Much in the vein of Creepypasta, several writers and Photoshop artists created a monster using their imaginations and using modern digital tools to bring that creature to life on the web.

The new TV series will focus on the two girls and their attempted homicide, the official synopsis reads;

“Shot over 18 months with heartbreaking access to the families of the would-be murderers, the film plunges deep down the rabbit hole of their crime, a Boogeyman and our society’s most impressionable consumers of media. The entrance to the internet can quickly lead us to its dark basement, within just a matter of clicks. How much do we hold children responsible for what they find there?”

While the HBO series will focus on the crime and lean towards documentary rather than thriller, American Horror Story is also poised to create a series about the Slenderman. The new season of AHS (with possible continuing casting of Lady Gaga in an as yet unspecified role) is rumored to focus on the Slenderman as well, as a real creature and menacing threat in the show.

Beware the Slenderman premieres at SXSW on March 11th 2016, with an HBO airdate TBA.
